Drawing Eye Step by Step

Drawing an eye was a challenge, especially when I realized the pencils I was using weren't right for the result I wanted.  A drawing below is 12 by 9 inches, drawn on the Strathmore vellum paper, If you want to find out about the paper here is the link: Pro-Art 457759 Strathmore Bristol Smooth Paper Pad 11 in. x 14 in. -20 (Google Affiliate Ad)

However, the pencils I used in this project were, H6, H2, HB, B2 and B4.  Pencils:Prismacolor Turquoise Drawing Pencil HB, 12/pk (Google Affiliate Ad) . Every one can draw an eye or rather just anything, there are some things to take note of when drawing or embarking on drawing a realist eye, one of those things is to think first, visualize your project, see the final end product, how do you really want to achieve the idea? think and brainstorm just like you would do with any other project.  Examine different variation of light on the reference picture, in this case on an eye reference picture.  The eye contains many shapes and layers, as an Artist, your work is to debunk those layers.

After examining the reference photo, off course you don't want to spend the all day just starring on the photo, now its time to put that pencil on the paper. Assuming you know what your style is, that is the layout and the angle of light. The next step is to implement a method to get the layout correct as it it, unless if you want to draw your own way and not make the drawing look exactly like the reference photo, then you have to apply some sort of a method or technique to get the layout as even as it looks like on the reference photo. In this case I normally use a technique called "Grid Method" some people might call it differently but thats how I call it.

Grid Method is a method that applies grid boxed to get the exact position of the stroke or outline of the picture you want to draw. I will be posting more articles about Grid Method so you can get familiar with it. Lets assume you got that specific skill down, now you move on to implementing the Grid Method skill to get the exact outline on the paper. My advise on this one is that make sure you get the outline as it is on the reference paper to get a good result for the final drawing. After getting the outline right, then move on to cleaning your drawing thoroughly until you are pleased with it. As an Artist you don't want to draw on a dirty paper or your drawing will look dirty. Make sure you don't erase the outline you've already drawn on the paper, if you do then redraw them to your liking.

Okay, now am excited on this next step. Lets say you have taken the previous steps, the study of variation angles of light, the reference photo, your style and the outline then now its time to move on to Shading. Now bare with me, Shading is the study on its own, people will rate you on how you shade, they are various technique on shading. Some Artist shade in circles, some shade in different style, it all depend on your style really there is no exceptional shading style. AS an Artist  your style is your inner Artist in you, so it is imperative to develop one as people will appreciate you for that. Your style is what makes you unique and differentiate you from other Artists.

When shading your outline, make sure you take time on that one. As I said, you will be rated on that specific style.

you tend to see everything differently. You start looking on objects with much attention trying to see which angle the light is coming from, the size, the contours, the shades, the textures, the highlights and the perspectives. Then you come to plan what tools to use, the pencils, the eraser, ruler, the source of light, ( I mean in the room you are going to use to draw, a lot of Artist prefer to use their Art Studios ), If you are going to draw at home, in your bedroom or dinning room, make sure you have enough of light source, not too much of light though as it can ruin your drawing, below are the best lights to useboth in studio or in the comfort of your home. These lights have adjustable knobs that comes really handy when adjusting how much light you need depending on the source of natural light. After determining how much light you have in the room or studio, you have to consider  how you are going to sit, again you have to make sure you are comfortable. Nevertheless, after assessing all these factors around you, you have to make sure you are in a good mood, because if you are not in a good mood, it is very difficult to draw and get the result you want, unless if you have tried drawing in a bad mood and it has worked for you before, then that will work. However, staying in a good mood and trying to all the time you go the studio is very helpful as it will bring you to life and let you enjoy the secrets of drawing.
Before you put the pencil on the paper to draw the eye, look at the reference photo, if you have one or just trying to drawing  from your mind. However, if you have a reference photo ( the photo you are using to draw a similar image from), observe it and find what intrigue you, I mean find what makes you go "wow", in Artist terms its called finding the Focal point, the point of interest. ( when drawing an eye, the focal point will be the pupil or the skin texturewhen you find the point of interest, go on and determine other shapes and how they lay close to each other, this will help you when examining the perspective and the proportions.

Then you want to execute the the method to use when laying down the first outline on paper. Again keep in mind that, laying down an outline is very, very, very important in drawing as this will determine how your drawing is going to come up. Many Artists I know usually take time to lay down the outline, this is done by utilizing tools like divider, rulers and not forgetting the clip board
